A land dispute in Uttar Pradesh’s Balrampur district took a turn for the worse on Monday when a middle aged woman, who had refused to transfer her land, was stripped, hung upside down from a tree and thrashed.

The local police, whom the woman later approached for help, allegedly mistreated her and refused to heed her complaint. The accused were some affluent men of her village and one of the main attackers has been identified as one Wajid Ali, who was pressurising her to transfer her land to him.

Later, the Balrampur District Magistrate came to her rescue and ordered a probe into the incident.

The Tulsipur Police Station also registered the FIR against the culprits and Inspector S.K. Rai and Sub-Inspector Alok Kumar Singh have been suspended. However, the culprits are still at large.

Superintendent of Police V.D. Shukla refuted the charges and said, “She wasn’t pushed away when she had gone to file a police report. We had registered an FIR against Wajid Ali, Sajid Ali, Mohammad Mutwil and Mohamad Matlub soon after she went to Tulsipur police station.”

Shukla said Additional SP L.B. Yadav was also sent to the spot for primary investigation and prima facie the charges were found to be true.

Meanwhile, Balrampur DM Priti Shukla said, “The Circle Officer of Tulsipur, Balak Ram, has been asked to conduct an inquiry into the case.”

This wasn’t the first time the woman had been attacked. Residents of Gudara-Jaddapur village, the accused had allegedly attacked her two months ago, forcing her son to run away. The woman claimed that she hasn’t heard from her son since then.

“The land-dispute is sub judice. They (the accused) had claimed that it was theirs and had confiscated it from me. I had moved the court; presently there is a stay order against their encroachment on my land,” she said.
