On Wednesday Baltimore officials are scheduled to approve an agreement to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup soccer games here if North America is selected as the host continent. The city’s Board of Estimates, which is controlled by Mayor Catherine Pugh, is expected to accept an agreement between the Federation Internationale De Football Association, United States Soccer Federation Inc. and the city to host the games.

Russia is host the 2018 World Cup. And Qatar will host the world cup on 2022.

Countries that Bid on Hosting 2026 World Cup

The FIFA official are deciding between Morocco and a joint bid by the United States, Canada and Mexico to host the 2026 event. The three countries have acquiesced a list of 32 cities that could host games if the joint bid wins.

Baltimore along with nearby Washington and Philadelphia are on the list. That list is expected to be narrowed to about a dozen. Fourty-eight countries qualify teams for the World Cup.

FIFA will decide in 2020 whether cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico will host the international event. The joint bid by the three North American countries is competing against Morocco as the two official bids to host the event.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is an international event where 48 national teams will compete in soccer tournaments against one another at venues selected by FIFA and the Member Association. The last time North America hosted the World Cup was in 1994.

When Baltimore was selected as a possible finalist to host games last year, Maryland officials welcomed the decision.

Terry Hasseltine, executive director of Maryland Sports, an agency of the Maryland Stadium Authority, said at the time that M&T Bank Stadium is “an ideal venue for the World Cup.”
