Fix WordPress Demo Content and Noindex Issues Before Launch
Use this guide before launch or review when a WordPress site may still have demo content, sample pages, staging remnants, hidden pages, or noindex settings left over from setup.
When to use this guide
- The site was built from a theme demo, starter template, migration, or imported content pack.
- Search results or sitemap URLs show pages that do not belong to the live business.
- Important pages are still noindexed after launch.
- Menus, footers, categories, tags, or widgets contain old placeholder wording.
What to check first
- Public homepage, menu, footer, sidebar, and policy pages.
- Sitemap URLs, category archives, tag archives, author archives, and date archives.
- Noindex status on homepage, service pages, guides, and policy pages.
- Visible theme/plugin warnings, broken layouts, and default WordPress text.
- Contact path and service/inquiry path before sending traffic.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Deleting visible demo pages but leaving them in the sitemap or search results.
- Removing noindex globally without deciding which pages should stay hidden.
- Ignoring footer, widget, and archive pages because the homepage looks finished.
- Launching before checking mobile layout and contact path.
Sample diagnostic patterns
These are public-site diagnostic patterns, not real customer examples and not evidence that any result is promised.
| Sample finding | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| A launch page looks finished, but footer text still says a default site name. | Small leftovers can reduce trust quickly. | Check footer, widgets, menus, Open Graph defaults, and SEO titles. |
| Noindex is removed from posts but still active on an important service page. | The site can look live to visitors while search visibility stays blocked. | Inspect page source and SEO plugin settings for each priority URL. |
| Demo category or tag archives remain public with thin content. | These pages may not help visitors or reviewers understand the site. | Review archive indexability and remove, noindex, or improve only after deciding their purpose. |
How to verify the issue
- Crawl the visible navigation manually on desktop and mobile.
- Open sitemap URLs and compare them to the intended launch pages.
- Check source for noindex on key pages.
- Confirm the Request Site Audit or Contact path works before traffic is sent.
